A simple, powerful tool for Q methodology research
Q methodology is a research approach that explores not "how many people agree," but rather "what different perspectives do people hold on this topic?" It is a mixed-methods approach that combines the rigor of statistical analysis with the depth of qualitative research.
The researcher prepares a set of statements on a specific topic. The number of statements depends on the Q structure you define (e.g., -3 to +3), and typically ranges from 16 to 23. These statements can be drawn from interviews, literature reviews, or other relevant sources.
Participants read each statement and place it on a distribution grid, ranging from "relatively most disagree" to "relatively most agree." This process reveals not simply whether participants agree or disagree, but which statements are relatively more important to them.
Through data analysis, the researcher identifies groups of people who sorted the statements in similar ways. Each group represents a distinct viewpoint, and meaningful patterns can emerge even from small studies of 15 to 30 participants.
This tool lets you handle the entire Q methodology data collection process online, without the hassle of paper cards or face-to-face sessions.
Click "Sign In" at the top right to create a free researcher account. Then click "+ New Study" to begin setting up a new study.
Follow the 5-step wizard to enter your project name, define the score distribution (e.g., -4 to +4), and input your statements. The distribution grid should form an inverted triangle shape, widest in the center and narrowing toward both ends. You can also add demographic questions for participants if needed.
Copy the unique links generated by the system and send them via email or messaging apps. Participants can join from any device, including PCs, tablets, and smartphones, anytime and anywhere.
Participants first do a quick pre-sort into three categories (agree / neutral / disagree), then drag and drop cards to fill in the grid. The interface supports 8 languages and offers convenient swipe gestures on mobile.
Monitor response status in real time on your dashboard. Once collection is complete, download the data as a KenQ-compatible XLSX file and start factor analysis right away, with no manual data entry required. (You can use it directly with KenQ Data Analysis, a web-based analysis tool.)
Please enter your participant ID to begin.
Please fill in the following information before starting the sort.
Read each statement and categorize it as Agree, Neutral, or Disagree.
